Bringing Houseplants Back Inside – A Postcard From Plants

Sep 20, 2025 | Lifestuff, Postcards From Plants

When bringing houseplants back inside:

  1. Start watering with Spinosad concentrate in the watering can. Do this for the first month after your plants come back inside to kill fungus gnat larvae. (These larvae feed on plant roots and organic matter in the potting mix.)
  2. Let the soil in your houseplants dry up a bit in between watering. Fungus gnats love constantly moist soil.
  3. While your houseplants are still outside, look on the bottom and inside edges of pots for hiding slugs.
  4. If a plant has had mealy bugs, aphids, or white fly inside in the past, spray with well with insecticidal soap while it’s still outside. Use a produce made for plants, not home dishwashing detergent.
  5. If a plant is drooping over the edges of the container, lift the foliage and look to see that there isn’t a mouse-home built in that sheltered location. Look for tree frogs too. No stow-aways!
  6. Clip off dead leaves and clean up the plant before you bring it indoors.
  7. Does it need a new pot? Transplant outside before bringing the plant indoors.
  8. Be sure that every plant has a large enough saucer underneath it to catch the overflow water. This ensures that you are able to water the plant well without flooding your house.
