Name: Bouteloua gracilis ‘Blonde Ambition’ aka blue grama
Type of Plant: Short, summer flowering grass for full sun, hardy in Zones 3-10. This grass is native to the southern and western United States.
Why I Love This Plant: What’s not to love about this grass, from the name, ‘Blonde Ambition,’ to the look of the seed spikes which hang from only one side of the stems? The fine texture is perfect for planting in with other perennials, especially for a wild-flower garden look. You can also grow this grass in a pot.
‘Blonde Ambition’ has chartreuse flowers that are often described as resembling eyelashes. (The flowers on the species are purple.) The grass can grow from 2 to 2 ½ feet tall.
A Word to the Wise: Plant ‘Blonde Ambition’ in full sun and well-drained soil, and don’t over-water. Once established it will self-seed.
