I Love Heptacodium miconioides aka Seven-Son Flower

Sep 6, 2024 | Love This!

Name:    Heptacodium miconioides aka seven-son flower

Type of Plant: A large shrub or small tree, often multi-stemmed.

Why I Love this Plant: There are so many things to love about the Heptacodium. First of all, if  you need a smaller tree, this is a great option. Secondly, it flowers in the fall, while many other trees are not in bloom. The flowers are white and the calyxes are pink, which makes this plant look like it’s still in flower into October. The trunk has peeling bark r pollinators. and the flowers are a good nectar source for hummingbirds, butterflies and othe

A Word to the Wise:  Hardy in zones 5 to 9, this plant grows best in full sun.

There aren’t many trees that flower in the fall, but the seven son flower is one of them. After the white flowers fade, the red calyxes continue to be showy and this extends the season for this plant.

These can be single stemmed trees or multi-trunked versions. All great!
