Annual poppies benefit from “winter sowing” but don’t start them in milk jugs or pots since these plants don’t transplant well. Scatter the seed on the top of the soil where you want them to grow. These seeds tend to sprout when the soil temperature is around 55° F. On Cape Cod that happens in May, but in other parts of the country it could be earlier.
