When Planting, Keep In Mind “Who Does it Feed?”

Sep 5, 2025 | Gardens

When we plant our gardens, it’s helpful to ask ourselves, “Who does it feed?”  Most of your perennials, shrubs, and trees are hopefully feeding wildlife. Some of your plants might also be feeding the soil. If you’re growing vegetables, your plants are providing food for your table. And some of your plants are there because they lift your spirits and make you happy. The point is, that every yard and garden needs diversity so that every one of these categories are being fed.

This week on The Garden Lady I also spoke about what it means when your lawn is being dug up in the fall. Do you have a “grub infestation?”  (Once it’s dug up, I can argue, “Not anymore!”) Do you need to panic? (No. Take a deep breath.) Do you need to respond? (Again, no. Go do something creative instead. Write a poem, make a sculpture, or bake something amazing.)

When skunks, crows, chipmunks or other critters dig into your lawn looking for food, consider it free lawn aeration. At the most, get out a rake and smooth it over. Or better yet, ignore it and let the lawn heal itself…which it will.
