A Postcard From Acorns and Oaks

Oct 10, 2026 | Gardens

Are there more acorns than usual in your yard or driveway? Are you asking, “Why are there so many acorns this year?” This periodic production of many seeds is called a mast year. It is part of a satiation strategy that many trees use to ensure that there are times when more of their seeds are likely to sprout and grow a new generation of plants. You can read more about this here.

On The Garden Lady on October 10th I welcomes Byron Martin. He and Laurelynn Martin are the co-owners of Logee’s Plants for Home and Garden Rare, Tropical and Fruiting Plants, and the authors of Edible Houseplants.

Calamansi (Citrus x microcarpa), also known as calamondin, is one of the commonly grown indoor citrus plants. It’s often called a calamondin orange, because the fruits are, well, orange…but it is not a miniature orange tree. The fruits are good with meat dishes such as turkey and duck, thinly sliced in salads, or squeezed into beverages and cocktails.
