A Postcard From Plants About the Myth of Sunlight and Water Drops

Jun 27, 2026 | Gardens

On The Garden Lady the postcard is about the old myth that spots on leaves are caused by the sun burning through drops of water. It’s not true. By all means avoid splashing foliage frequently as this promotes fungal leaf spot. Try to water in the morning whenever possible.

My Guest on The Garden Lady on June 27 was Mason Vollmer – his book made me want to plant spindle apple trees!

Raindrops on roses can remain one of your favorite things… Don’t worry if the sun comes out immediately after a rain. The sun doesn’t burn holes in flowers and foliage if the rays hit the raindrops.
