Garden Destination: Pittsburgh, PA

Mar 6, 2018 | Garden Travel

I had never been in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before GWA: The Association for Garden Communicators held their annual meeting there in 2014. But I’m glad we met there because I discovered what a great city this is. I’d go back in a heartbeat. From the museums to the “strip district” shopping and dining, this is a great tourist destination. But on the top of the list of must-see Pittsburgh destinations is the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Go to Pittsburgh for this destination alone. Here are some of the many photos I took when I visited this Pennsylvania treasure.

There are lovely glass houses at the Phipps, with beautifully planted and kept plant displays.

The outdoor gardens are equally thoughtful and beautiful, whether it’s a vegetable bed or flowers. This veggie garden gives visitors a great idea about the use of color on plant supports and fencing.

If you visit the Phipps gardens in the summer you’ll come away with many plant names that you’ll want to try in your own garden.

You’ve heard that orange and pink don’t mix? So why does this planting that I saw at the Phipps Children’s Garden make me so happy? Be bold. Break the rules.
