Name: Anigozanthos ‘Kanga Pink’ aka Dwarf Pink Kangaroo Paw
Type of Plant: This is an evergreen perennial in zones 9-11, but a long-flowering container plant in colder areas. Drought tolerant and sun loving.
Why I Love This Plant: Not only does this flower for a long time, the fuzzy stalks can also be cut for bouquets. It would be a great container plant for someone who forgets to water, since kangaroo paws are drought tolerant and actually prefer to go a bit dry in between soakings.
A Word to the Wise: Don’t let the plant go for more than 10 days without watering…there’s only so much drought that one container plant can stand!

Anigozanthos Kanga Pink makes a great pot plant in colder climates. You can over-winter these in front of a sunny window indoors, but like many plants that would prefer to be outdoors in a warmer climate, be on the lookout for mealy bug and scale.

I love how these plants look as the flowers open. I’ve read that they attract hummingbirds, but so far I haven’t seen my hummers here…I’ll have to move it to the deck where the birds are already used to foraging.

Kangaroo paw plants are native to Australia…which you’d expect, given their common name.
