Name: Salvia officianalis aka common or culinary sage
Type of Plant: This herb is a perennial in zones 4 to 8. It grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. This sage is semi-evergreen and flowers in early summer in most regions.
Why I Love/Hate this plant: What’s not to love about this plant? Pretty gray-green leaves, great flavor, easy to grow. This is an herb that should be grown for how it adds to the look of a garden and how it enhances the taste of a meal.
A Word to the Wise: I think it’s worth planting several Salvia officianalis plants in several areas of your landscape. Put some in your herb garden, for sure. But think about using this in and among other perennials or in rock gardens, and even in front of shrubs.
Salvia officianalis is desirable in the garden for the look of the foliage alone.
Use common sage to garnish food or cocktails!
Mine get woody after a few years, then die.
I cut mine back by 1/3 to 2/3 in the spring. They need full sun, and good drainage. And if one dies, they cost less than $6.00 at the local garden center, so easy to replace.
